Reasons a Dancer Chooses to Attend A College Dance Program

Every senior high school student faces the life altering decision of whether or not to attend college after graduating. For the senior high school dancer this decision can be critical. There are only so many years a dancer has to dance and taking the four to five years it takes to get a college degree could take time off of a potential career in dance.

However, many dancers choose to attend a college dance program instead of heading straight into the crazy world of professional dancing and the reasons why might be surprising. Here are some reasons dancers have for attending a college dance program.

Further Their Training. Whether you are a ballet, tap, hip-hop or modern dancer it still will take many years of training to achieve a skill level that can survive in the professional world of dance. Many dancers choose to use college dance programs as a way to further their training in their chosen style of dance.

Pursue a Career in Teaching. A lot of dancers use a college degree in dance to launch their dance teaching career. Many of the college programs require you to study a wide range of styles and even offer courses in business and dance teaching, so the study is dance teacher specific.

Network and Professional Teachers. Some of the best dance teachers teach at some of the college dance programs. Many dancers use these programs as a way to be able to train with some of the best dance teachers in the world. These college dance programs are also a great way to network and get your name out there as a dancer. Many professional companies recruit from the dance programs put on through the college dance programs.

Injury. Some dancers due to injury cannot handle strenuous training. Dance college programs allow these types of dancers to be able to still study what they love without the risk of re-injuring themselves.

A School that Offers it All

One of the finest institutions to consider when applying to schools for studying the performing arts would be The American Music and Dramatic Academy, (AMDA). 

This school offers training in the areas of acting, musical theater, dance, and much more. It’s a two to four year school that includes very intense studied and physical work. You learn what is needed to start your career, but with any training, it doesn’t guarantee that you will become famous! 

Tuition plus hosing can run you about $35,000 per semester year. Financial Aid is available to those who qualify.

Here are two examples of courses that are broken down in the time of your training at AMDA:

Bachelor of Fine Arts 

This area helps train you for a career in acting. When you sign up for this four year course, you will be on stage from the first day all they up to the time of graduation. You will gain all theatrical tools that are needed to jump start you endeavor.

Studio / Conservatory Program

This two year training focuses on stage and the film industry. When you begin, you learn different techniques to build your passion. The following year you apply what you have learned to get ready for auditions and ways to market yourself. 

Studio / Conservatory Programs and Bachelor Programs are offered for Musical Theatre, Dance, and Performing Arts. The differences between the two, just like the examples listed above, depend on at what rate you would like to go. Some students find that they need more time with training and shoot for a Bachelor degree. Others tend to want to get their training at a more advanced level and lean toward the Studio Programs. 

No matter which program you choose or the area of study, AMDA has what you are looking for. Both have much to offer and you will get much needed training for this challenging industry!
