Relevancy of Costume Design in Artistic Productions

For many types of artistic productions, a distinct focus is placed on costume design for the individuals who produce the show. A certain focus in more recent times in movies, it exists throughout the performing arts, such as in plays, musicals, and other types of productions.

An example may be seen, for instance, with the presence of large budget movies that are based in a historical era. Films that need to, with precision, characterize the figures in a movie often rely heavily on costume design. Obviously well-done costume design, portraying the setting of the movie, can add to its realism and aesthetics.

As costume design exists today, producers and directors stress authentic and effective costumes for their characters, taking the lead of the history of costume design and other modern productions. As a result, some choose to make their own costumes, or order them from a costume company such as costumeexpress.com.

In other productions, a more minimalist approach is taken. A number of plays and films do not place such a high importance on exquisite costumes, relying on the dialogue or other mechanics of the production to give it character. However, even in a minimalist approach, costume will have some importance.

On either spectrum, or likely, somewhere in between, costume design is in the eye of the director of the performance. This has been the case for the history of costume design, which is long and well-regarded. For instance, the history of costumes in the West can point back to the ancient Greeks, and even Biblical and pre-historic times.

Without question costume design will continue to play a very important role in films, performing arts, and similar areas. From ancient Greek masks to modern big-budget films, costume design has helped shape the integrity and spectrum of artistic productions. Costume design will continue to be relevant in artistic productions, indeed.

Making It In The Entertainment Industry

The most difficult society to break into is that of show business.  Hundreds of thousands of hopeful young people all trying to make it, break into show business, make a name for themselves, get noticed, get an agent to notice you, get a producer to notice you.  Almost every one who seriously attempts to make it has talent.  There are also no talent idiots trying to break into show business every day.  Without rhyme or reason, there are also no talent idiots with SAG cards, who have made it, broken into show business.  To each his own.  There are so many degrees of talent.  Not everyone has to sing like a lark to make it in Hollywood.

Today’s Hollywood hopefuls have to bring that certain something to the table.  That certain something that gets them noticed, the something that makes the talent scouts of Hollywood stand up and take a look.  Not everyone has it.  To the person who does, the doors will open.  There is a certain truth to being in the right place at the right time.  That may just give you the chance to work your magic, show those who are watching that you have what it takes, that you can hold your own among the big stars of today.  There have to be big stars for tomorrow.  Every star on the Hollywood walk of fame fades.  We remember them all, but they are no longer money making working actors.  Why not take your shot at getting your time in the spotlight?  There really are a lot of spotlights at any given time, if you find the one that is right for you, who knows where you will be?  We might just be buying lunch boxes with your picture on it, wearing you on a T shirt and waiting in line for hours just to shake your hand, get your autograph, meet you and be in your aura, even if for just a short time.

Is An International Program For You?

Studying the Arts has never been so exciting.  There are programs virtually all across the country with different areas of interest, and courses of study.  However, the Arts education does not stop at the borders of the United States.  There is so much to be learned internationally.  While you may start your education here in the United States, it can be part of your course of study to spend some time in Europe, learning what the other side of the ocean has to offer you.  Obviously the best education is one that encompasses all aspects of the course of study.  Having the opportunity to study abroad can offer you a wealth of knowledge of how things are done there. It is not unheard of that someone studying in Europe decides that Europe is where they want to be, and studies are continued in another country.

Just as we have exchange students come over from Europe to here, there are programs available for people from the United States to study abroad.  Studying Art in France can be an invaluable part of an artist’s education.  Studying theater in London can give an entirely new perspective to a student wishing to pursue an education in theater.  Having a basic knowledge of what you want to study is the first important step in deciding if an international program is the best choice for you.  For the most part, during your education you will be constantly searching for ways to make your education experience give you the most education for your effort.

If you do the leg work, you may come across a program that pertains to your study that is offered across the ocean.  Your own school may actually have an exchange program that they can connect you with.  Make the most of your education, it is the basis for your career.

Taking the Lead: Dancing Classrooms

Dance is rarely a mandatory part of a child’s education. If dance is taught at all, it is part of a physical education curriculum, is briefly covered, and presented only as a form of exercise, not as a form of artistic expression. Seeing a need in New York City’s worst performing public schools, Broadway stars Pierre Dulaine and Yvonne Marceau started a program called Dancing Classrooms in 1994, as an educational addition to their company American Ballroom Theatre. The film “Take the Lead” starring Antonio Banderas is based on the couple’s adventures in starting the program. The program works with participating school systems and teaches dance to students in grades 5, 8, and 12. Throughout a semester, students learn basic ballroom steps, gain self-confidence, and learn to appreciate an art form that many wouldn’t be exposed to otherwise. Partner dance has proven an effective element in  getting shy kids to open up and make new friends. At the end of the course, students showcase their work on stage for classmates, teachers, and family.

Dance education has largely been restricted to the extra-curricular spaces in a child’s education: after school ballet or tap dance lessons. This means that a child must demonstrate a love for dance early on and the parent must have the resources to provide the lessons, leaving most children unable to partake in dance education. Dancing Classrooms provides dance education at minimal or no cost to students. After a school-hosted course, students are invited to take regular private lessons at a discounted rate at Dancing Classrooms private studios around the country. Currently Dancing Classroom operates in Cleveland, Dallas, several cities in Florida, Long Island, Newark, New York, Omaha, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and St. Louis. To find out more information or get a chapter started in your city, you can visit the Dancing Classrooms website at americanballroomtheater.com.

How to Put On a Musical

So you think you can put on a musical? Well, good luck! It’s a big undertaking, but one that is well worth it. There are a million things that will need to be done but hopefully this list will make sure you at least get all your big ducks in a row before opening night.
The first one is obviously picking your musical. It could be something big that requires a large chorus or something a little smaller and intimate. Getting together the right team will help you make the right decision as to exactly which musical you want to produce. Find a musical director, a production manager and a stage manager that you know and trust; you will all be a tight group and you need to be able to work as a team. Only you and your team know your own strengths and weaknesses, so keep them in mind when picking a show.
Next, you need to get a cast and crew. Hold auditions and decide together who is best for which part. Place ads to get a great crew who can bring your vision to life. Find a space to put on your show and work with your funders to get all the money you need. While all of these things are coming together, make sure your cast and talent directors are rehearsing like crazy. Each day only brings you a little closer to opening night, so make good use of your time while you have it.
Once the rehearsal time is nearing an end, it is time to start advertising. Make eye-catching flyers and paper the town with them. They are the only way most people are going to learn about your show and want to buy tickets. Run dress rehearsals the week before and get everything coordinated. Make sure everyone’s vision is being realized. If it is, then you will likely have a success!

Broadway or Bust

Broadway, every theatrical actor’s dream.  The big time, the big lights, the big crowds, the big money.  There are shows being performed on Broadway several times a day, hundreds of thousands or shows a year.  There are a lot of parts to be filled.  Casting calls are constant.  Yet, the coveted spot on the team, to be part of the cast, may be something that is not so easy to possess.  There are first calls, call backs, meetings with casting directors, producers, directors, readings with other hopefuls.  The list is endless, and this is a daily job for the working actor.

While some actors choose to make their alternate living as busboys for the restaurants of Broadway, or driving cabs, or pushing coffee in the local Starbucks, some might just choose to go to the forbidden place – off Broadway.  Yet others, who have struggled to make their name in the Big Apple may choose to go off, off Broadway, even out of New York altogether.  There are plenty of theaters out there, and plenty of cast lists that need to be filled.  Maybe the money is not as big as Broadway, maybe the hustle and bustle is confined to one theater, but this is acting at its finest.  It is said that every actor worth his Tony award has cut his teeth on community theater, worked his way through traveling companies and smaller venues before finding his way to Broadway.  There is something to be said for that experience.  Few and far between are the natural talents that are plucked from obscurity and forced into overnight stardom.

Acting is a craft, and crafts are learned.  While natural talent will get you started, you had better know what to do with it before just running into any and every audition you can find.  Taking the time to learn your craft, to become educated in the ways things are done is a valuable lesson.  You just might find yourself under those bright lights yet.
